Trick: The vertical corner shove

Post by EddyMataGallos on Fri Jul 11, 2014 6:17 am

Hi guys, Eddy here, presenting you a new trick which I recently discovered. Its a variation of the corner shove (which is just getting extra push from a corner), done with a 180º angle, that is, completely vertical. I say "discovered" because its impossible to do a vertical corner shove in N v1.4, hence even though the trick is well known, nobody had done it with a vertical angle.

Depending on the length of the wall, this trick can be extremely difficult, but its pretty useful to "unmax" levels that seem to have been maxed out, something that is always pretty cool haha.

Here you have the test map I made to present it:

www.thewayoftheninja.org/nv2.html?l=88591
Title: "The vertical corner shove - Grab that extra frame"

Regular max score is 5277, and with the shove you can get 5278. You can check my demo if you have any doubts. I do two shoves, one on each wall corner. I'm not sure if, in the particular case of my test map, you can gain a whole frame with just one shove.

Have fun managing this trick guys!

Note: In this test map, the trick is pretty difficult, however, don't let that discourage you, since in shorter walls, the trick is much easier! Also, I haven't tested longer walls yet, it might be harder, or easier because of the bigger horizontal momentum, I have no clue yet.

Corner shove on a non vertical wall? I don't quite understand what that is.

Also, my run on that map is interesting, I grab the wall for a split second... As if i gain 2 frames and lose 1.

Nice job cooper, its not that you gain 2 frames and lose 1, during that frame you are not actually losing any frame but actually gaining 1 (or at least 0.5) because of the shove. That also happens in v1.4, you seem to wallslide but you are actually slightly hitting the corner (you are also wallsliding without wasting a frame).

At least, thats what I think, of course I could be wrong, but with all my previous experience that seems the actual behaviour.

Check my vertical corner shove on level "Eddy The Fag", you'll see the same happened to me xD

Regarding the non vertical wall, you are right, I didn't explain myself properly haha! I meant, doing a corner shove with a non-vertical angle. Thanks for the correction there ;)

You mean corner shoves like when the corner is cave-like, and you jump at the corner to speed you ninja in its fall?
I wasnt trying to correct you, Im just not familiar with corner shoves so was trying to figure out what it was. Im not new to n, but im far from a veteran, so a lot of these techniques are new to me.
Nice job pimping a map that is calling you a fag, thats a hit to the ego.

It seems like this whole help for running section should just be called eddy helping cooper. (lol)

Hidden frames are one of my favourite things about n, they bring such an interesting depth to what is essentially just a flash game.

Haha thanks, I meant corner shoves which you approach with an angle that is not vertical. In that case, hitting them is pretty easy and you can gain several frames.

Those cave-like corner shoves aren't possible in v2.0 unfortunately :/ I supose you have seen them in v1.4, I really love them as they add a lot of flow to the runs.

Oh yeah I really love that too, thats one of the great things about N, there are many subtly things that, with time, you can master and will help when speedrunning levels. In v1.4 there are even more little glitches that we use to speedrun, that is pretty cool.

Eddy the corner trick is actually difficult and one more thing I wanna ask, remember in nreality, we were able to take push from below the bounce block and move up? I dunno what do you call it, but its like u jump from the lower corner of the bounce block. I had seen it many times before but I cant find it on numa, pai mei and swipenet are the experts in this thing
I asked Ben Schultz but his "way of teaching" wasn't good  :-)

Thats called a bbbwj (bounce block backwards jump). They are also doable in N v2.0 if thats what you are asking ;) Also, the experts? Lol thats a simple trick that any highscorer/speedrunner can do (at least in the N v1.4 community where we are more experienced). Once you get the hang of them they are even more consistent than bb corner kicks, at least for me.

I made a couple test maps with those tricks last year:

www.thewayoftheninja.org/nv2.html?l=46727
www.thewayoftheninja.org/nv2.html?l=49654

Regarding "teaching", to be honest I have no clue. The way I learned, and probably everybody learned, was just by practising. Pick a good test map and practise trying to get a bbbwj. Then change it and jump to it with different angles, speeds, etc. That way you can make sure you are getting the hang of the trick. There's no other way to learn a trick but to do this, practising all different variations of it.

I've done it in some of the Metanet levels in N v2.0, but I don't quite remember the numbers right now. I only remember 53-4, the trick you say is at the end.

Haha Right but I can't do it always, but yeah I can only do it in nrealtiy, not in nv2, probably I hate its physics :-) .

Experts? yeah I guess, I asked james donnely, macrohenry and ben Schultz but it didn't work. But one thing I wanted to ask Eddy, do you press jump twice to make the jump?.
And yeah I have found the example and macrohnery has beaten pai mei in nreality.
see this http://www.nmaps.net/204442
that is what I wanted to ask :D

Of course not :P You can get the hang of it but not doing it always, that would be way too good :P

Regarding your other question, no you don't jump twice, just jump when you are close to the bottom corner of the bounce block. The sweet spot where this can be executed you will know it with practise ;)

That's weird, for me, they work the same in both versions, I don't feel any difference o.O
